Tesla China Deliveries Decline for Third Consecutive Month as Model Y Falls 26%

Tesla's China deliveries extended their downward trajectory in August 2026, with Model Y sales declining 25.76% year-on-year to 29,260 units, representing the weakest August showing since 2021. The contraction represents a deepening of negative momentum that began in June at 13.81%, followed by 18.23% decline in July. Total company deliveries reached 50,047 vehicles, down 12.43% annually for a third consecutive monthly decline.

Model 3 deliveries reversed course with a 17.18% year-on-year increase to 20,787 units, achieving the highest monthly total of the year. The sedan's surge from July's 2,091 units represented an 894.12% month-on-month jump. However, the rebound proved insufficient to counterbalance Model Y's weakness, as the SUV's 10,153-unit decline outweighed the Model 3's 3,048-unit gain.

According to China Passenger Car Association data, Model Y accounted for 58.47% of Tesla's August China deliveries, down from 68.96% a year earlier and the lowest share since February 2025. Year-to-date figures show Model Y deliveries declined 6.10% to 226,931 units across the first eight months, while Model 3 fell 25.26% to 89,320 units.

Tesla introduced limited-time promotional incentives on September 7 to stimulate demand for inventory vehicles. The program offers 10,000 yuan ($1,480) reductions for Model Y and 5,000 yuan for Model 3 vehicles purchased and delivered by September 30, alongside paint options, insurance subsidies and financing arrangements.

Export performance provided support, with Shanghai factory Model Y exports rising 35.75% to 26,437 units and Model 3 exports increasing 47.48% to 9,682 units in August. Combined exports reached 36,119 vehicles, up 38.71% year-on-year.
