Tesla Extends Full Self-Driving v14 Lite to Older Model S and Model X Vehicles

Owners of Model S and Model X vehicles equipped with Hardware 3 are poised to receive Full Self-Driving v14 Lite after an extended wait. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's AI chief, indicated that the rollout "was supposed to go out last week," suggesting imminent arrival.

These legacy flagship models represent the final major cohort of HW3 vehicles awaiting the update. Rollout to Model 3 and Model Y with the same processor began in late June 2026 and expanded across North America and select international markets including South Korea by July.

v14 Lite uses software distillation to run current driving capabilities on older hardware incapable of supporting the full AI 4 model. The compressed network occupies roughly 15 percent of the original model's size. The update will deliver multiple new parking features including parking, unparking, reverse driving, and arrival options for varied locations such as parking lots, street positions, driveways, and curbsides. Improvements also target merge handling, intersection navigation, pedestrian recognition, traffic-light response, and lane-centering smoothness, while reducing false slowdowns.

Tesla confirms that Hardware 3 cannot support unsupervised Full Self-Driving or robotaxi functionality due to memory and bandwidth constraints. Remaining development focuses on vehicle-specific validation rather than fundamental software changes. Build 2026.20.6.10, released mid-July, introduced a standalone Self-Driving app and trip initiation without brake-pedal confirmation—the version Elluswamy described as likely for wide release. Other Hardware 3 users in North America already possess the update, though international availability depends on regulatory approval and regional validation.
